About Croydon: markets, the Clocktower and the neighbourhoods beyond

Get to know Croydon through its working market, cultural venues and the local streets beyond the centre.

Find the older town within the modern skyline

Croydon's tall buildings and transport links are only one part of its identity. Around Surrey Street, a working market sits close to older shopping streets, while the red-brick Town Hall and Clocktower provide a different view of the centre. The market's history reaches back to 1276, but it remains part of everyday shopping rather than simply a heritage stop.

Begin with what you want from the day: a few errands, lunch, a cultural visit or time exploring on foot. Combining two nearby stops is often more rewarding than trying to cover the whole borough at once.

Make room for Croydon's different stories

The Museum of Croydon, within the Clocktower complex, is a useful introduction to the people and communities that have shaped the area. Nearby cultural venues include the David Lean Cinema and Fairfield Halls, each with its own programme.

Outside the centre, South Croydon, Addiscombe, Waddon and Shirley have distinct shops, services and residential streets. Further-out places such as Purley and Coulsdon belong to the wider borough; they are not all a short walk from the town centre.

Choose the right starting point

East Croydon and West Croydon are different stations, so check the address of your destination when planning a journey. Use current transport information for rail, tram and bus connections.

Our area filters help you look near home or find a business serving your neighbourhood. Check the business's listed base and coverage before arranging a visit.
